Genshin Impact's Snezhnaya Update Is Here, and It Skipped a Whole Patch to Get There

HoYoverse skipped a whole version number to get here, Snezhnaya is finally open, and it brought a third-person shooter mode with it.

HoYoverse didn't just release Genshin Impact's Version 7.0 on August 12 they skipped 6.8 entirely to get to it. That's the kind of scheduling decision that tells you a studio wanted a clean, symbolic jump into its final major region, and Snezhnaya has been the most anticipated destination in the game for years.

If you've been playing since launch, you know why. Snezhnaya is the Fatui's home turf, ruled by the Tsaritsa, and it's been teased and referenced since the earliest Archon Quests. Getting there isn't just "new map," it's the game finally paying off a plot thread that's been simmering since 2020.

What's Actually in the Region

Snezhnaya is built around Kresnik energy for warmth, which tells you the environmental storytelling here is doing some work this isn't just a snowy reskin of an existing biome, it's a place designed to feel hostile by default. Players explore snowy tundras connected by an interconnected train system, and the new Eye of Graeae tool is the mechanical glue holding a lot of that together: it lets you call trains, fabricate Prime Ice Constructs for puzzle-solving, and this is the part getting the most attention unlock a third-person shooter mode.

A TPS mode is a genuinely unusual addition for Genshin. This is a game that's mostly stuck to action-RPG combat and light puzzle mechanics for six years. Whether it ends up being a one-off gimmick for specific puzzle sequences or a recurring gameplay pillar going forward is something we won't know until we see how deep the 7.0 Archon Quest actually leans on it.

New Elemental Reaction: Stellar Swirl

Snezhnaya also brings Stellar Swirl, triggered by combining Anemo and Cryo. It's the second reaction in the Stellar Glimmer system, following Stellar-Conduct from an earlier patch. If HoYoverse is building out an entire secondary reaction system alongside the classic elemental one, that's a sign they're trying to keep combat build diversity fresh for veteran players who've had the same seven elements to work with for years.

Cryo Traveler and the Archon Quest

The Traveler finally gets a Cryo alignment in this update, unlocked by interacting with a Statue of the Seven in Snezhnaya following the same pattern as every other regional Traveler element unlock. The Archon Quest tied to this patch focuses on a catastrophic blizzard and the energy crisis it's causing in Snezhnaya, digging into the forces behind it. Completing it rewards 560 Primogems.

Release Timing and Compensation

For NA players, maintenance started around 3:00 PM PST on August 11; for the rest of the world, it was 6:00 AM CST on August 12, with roughly a 5-hour maintenance window. Players Adventure Rank 5 and above got 300 Primogems in compensation, which is the standard maintenance-downtime payout HoYoverse has used for years.

Banners: What's Live Now

Phase 1 Event Wishes are running from August 12 through September 1. Phase 2 brings Flins and Ineffa, running September 1 through September 22.

What's Not Confirmed Yet

Here's where we need to be careful, because there's a lot of chatter online treating unconfirmed details as settled fact. Version 7.1 has no official release date. Based on the standard 42-day update cycle, outlets are estimating around September 23, 2026, and framing it as the game's anniversary patch. Rumored new characters for that patch commonly named as Vesna and Vodyanitsa (some sources spell it Bojhanitsa) are not officially confirmed. Neither are the rumored reruns for Zibai and Linnea. Treat all of that as speculation until HoYoverse actually announces it, which they typically do via a livestream a couple weeks before each new version.

KiwamiGG's Take

The TPS mode is the most interesting swing HoYoverse has taken in a long time, and it's a smart way to make Snezhnaya feel mechanically distinct from every region before it rather than just visually distinct. That said, we'd hold off on getting too attached to leaked 7.1 characters HoYoverse has changed banner order and character kits between leak and release before, and Snezhnaya especially has been a magnet for inaccurate leaks given how long it's been anticipated.read that's been simmering since 2020.
